International Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month

As we step into July, we are reminded of the significance this month holds for many families and individuals worldwide. July is International Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about juvenile arthritis, supporting those affected, and promoting early diagnosis and treatment.

Understanding Juvenile Arthritis

Juvenile arthritis (JA) is an umbrella term used to describe various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions that develop in children under the age of 16. The most common type is Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), which can cause persistent joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. The exact cause of JA is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Why Awareness Matters

Raising awareness about juvenile arthritis is crucial for several reasons:

  • Early Diagnosis: Early detection and treatment can prevent severe joint damage and improve the quality of life for children with JA.
  • Education: Increased awareness helps parents, teachers, and caregivers recognize the symptoms of JA and seek appropriate medical care.
  • Support: Awareness fosters a supportive community for children and families affected by JA, providing them with the resources and encouragement they need.
Symptoms of Juvenile Arthritis

Parents and caregivers should be vigilant for the following signs and symptoms:

  • Persistent joint pain and swelling
  • Stiffness, particularly in the morning
  • Limping or difficulty using a limb
  • Sudden changes in physical activity levels
  • Unexplained fevers and rash

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

Our Commitment to Juvenile Arthritis Care

At Summit Orthopedics, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for children with juvenile arthritis. Our multidisciplinary team includes orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and support staff, all working together to create personalized treatment plans for our young patients.

Treatment Options

Treatment for juvenile arthritis may include:

  • Medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic agents.
  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to improve joint function and mobility.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Nutritional guidance and activity recommendations to support overall health.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, surgical interventions may be necessary to repair or replace damaged joints.

Together, we can make a significant impact in the lives of children with juvenile arthritis. Thank you for being a part of our community and for your continued support in raising awareness this July.

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is redefining the way musculoskeletal care is delivered across the region with locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
