Hand & Upper Extremity
Hand and upper extremity surgery is a very broad field that encompasses the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, nerves, and other soft tissues from the hand to the shoulder.
Because this region is so exposed and so heavily used in day-to-day activity, it can be affected by many conditions that cause pain or loss of function. These include injuries such as fractures, ligament tears, and nerve or tendon lacerations; degenerative and overuse changes such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or tendinitis; and problems that just come up such as tumors or infections.
Our hand and upper extremity team consists of Dr. Mustafa Haque, a fellowship trained hand surgeon who takes care of the entire upper extremity, and Dr. Steven Bernstein, a sports medicine specialist who has a particular interest in shoulder issues, working closely with several physical therapists and an experienced occupational/hand therapist.
Many of these conditions are effectively treated with medications, rest, and therapy, and we believe in a conservative first approach. Due to the complex anatomy of the upper extremity, you need a doctor who has the training and experience in the delicate procedures required to restore the anatomy, relieve pain and preserve and maintain normal motion and function. If surgery of the hand or upper extremity becomes necessary, our surgeons have the experience to repair even the most difficult injuries. Our integrated team approach to recovery greatly enhances outcomes.
